How To Prepare For Surfing

Getting Ready to Ride the Bali Waves!

Bali’s waves are calling your name! But before you change into your bathing suit and run to the beach to go surfing, a little pre-surf preparation will set the tone for an enjoyable and successful surf session. We want to ensure you have the ultimate Bali surfing experience, and that starts with feeling prepared and energised for all those waves to catch! With these 6 key pre-surf steps you will make your surf sesh a lot more fun.

1. Sleep Well & Fuel Up For Fun

After a restful night of sleep, a healthy, filling nourished breakfast sets the tone for the rest of your day. Just as any other workout, you need the right kind of fuel to conquer those waves! Opt for a balanced breakfast rich in carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. What about a smoothie bowl or oatmeal with fresh toppings, whole-wheat toast with avocado and eggs, or a Greek yoghurt with granola and fruit? A good breakfast will let you paddle harder and catch more waves!

2. Check the Forecast

Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to the ocean and surfing. Before heading out, during your breakfast, check the surf forecast for your chosen surf break. Look for factors like swell height, wind direction, and tide charts. The best conditions for beginners are small, consistent waves with a gentle shore break and offshore winds. The offshore winds create smoother waves with less whitewater, making it easier to pop up and balance.

Furthermore, you should choose a beach break surf spot. This means the waves break on the sandy bottom, offering forgiving surroundings to learn new surf skills.

Understanding how to read the forecast and about the conditions will help you to have a safe and enjoyable surfing experience.

3. Dress for Success

When entering the water for your surf session, you should wear swimwear that’s designed for surfing: Use tops and bottoms that fit tight but allow for freedom of movement. Choose a bikini top with a supportive cross-back strap design or a one-piece suit to avoid funny and embarrassing moments during wipeouts.

Boardshorts are the classic choice for male surfers, providing a comfortable and secure fit. Look for styles with a drawstring closure for added adjustability.

Depending on the beach and bottom conditions, booties might be a good idea, too. They offer protection from sharp rocks, coral reefs, and sea urchins, while also providing extra grip when walking on slippery rocks. However, during our 5-day Learn To Surf program, we’ll focus on safe beach breaks where booties aren’t necessary.

Many surfers also choose to wear earplugs. These can help prevent surfers’ ear (otitis externa), a condition caused by excess moisture trapped in the ear canal. So if you have sensitive ears, these come in handy!

4. Protect From The Sun

Sun protection is a must in Bali’s sunny climate. Especially since you’ll be in the water most of the time. Choose a reef-safe, eco-friendly and waterproof sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed skin at least 30 minutes before paddling out.  Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or towelling off.

Here’s a pro surfer’s tip: avoid applying sunscreen directly to your belly or upper legs. It will transfer to the wax on your board and it will get really slippery, trust us, we know through experience!

We offer free rashguards as part of our 5-day learn-to-surf program. Rashguards not only provide an extra layer of sun protection, it also protect your skin from irritation caused by constant rubbing against the surfboard.

5. Warm Up Your Body & Practise Your Pop-Up!

Yes, almost ready to get your surf party started! Warming up your body is key to preventing injuries. Spend a few minutes doing stretches, jumping jacks, and arm circles to get your blood flowing and muscles loose. Our surf guides will lead you through a fun and effective warm-up routine specifically designed for surfers.

Also before jumping in the water, we recommend practising your pop-up on the beach around 5-10 x before paddling out. This will help you feel more confident and prepared to catch your first wave!

6. Get Your Board Ready!

Breakfast is fueling your body, the forecast is promising, you look stunning in your surf outfit, and pre-surf excitement is feeling in your body – it’s almost time to hit the waves! But there’s one crucial thing you can’t forget: your surfboard. Don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple.

When surfing a hard top surfboard, you’d need to wax your boarding. This prevents slipping on it and provides a good grip. During our 5-day Learn to Surf Program, we use soft top surfboards. These boards are safer and easier for beginners and don’t need to be waxed. However, always check your board before entering the water. Ensure your leash is securely fastened to both your ankle and the leash plug on the back of your board, and double-check your board for any cracks or dings that could compromise its strength. Give it a little tug to make sure it’s secure on both sides and that’s pretty much it! Your board is now ready to catch some waves with you.

With these preparations, you and your board you and your board will be ready to shred together! Are you ready?
