Packing Tips for Your First Surf Adventure!

Get Ready for Bali’s waves!

Getting ready for your first trip to Bali to learn how to surf? Exciting! You want to feel relaxed, safe and focus on catching your first waves during your first journey. And knowing what to pack as a beginner surfer will make a difference. Don’t worry, you don’t need a lot and we are here to help! Here’s a helpful list of what you should think of when packing your suitcase and what our Surf School in Bali provides for you.

What to Bring to Your Surf Lesson

1. Sun Protection is a Must

Bali’s sun is strong, especially when you spend a lot of time in the water. So make sure you pack a waterproof sunscreen with a high-SPF and apply it before your session. A zinc cream is also a great option, especially for your face and nose. You don’t want to look like a lobster when going home! One thing to put extra attention to: avoid putting sunscreen on your belly and legs just before jumping in the water. If you do, the surfboard becomes slippery and you don’t have much grip.

We also recommend wearing a rash guard if you are looking for extra sun protection. If you join our Learn to Surf Program then Surf school in Bali will provide you with rashguards to help with sun protection.. Also, a surf hat or cap and polarized sunglasses are good ideas to keep your face and eyes safe when you’re relaxing on the beach or paddling out.

2. Water and Snacks

Surfing in Bali can be physically tiring and staying hydrated is important. So make sure you bring a reusable water bottle and drink before and after your session with Surf School in Bali. It’s also a great idea to enjoy a refreshing cold coconut on the beach! Also pack some light snacks like energy bars and fruits to keep your energy levels up before or after your session.

3. Extra Clothes and Towel

Make sure you bring an extra change of clothes for when you are done with surfing. A quick drying towel is perfect for getting off saltwater and relaxing on the beach after you have been practicing your surfing skills on those waves. Plus, a lightweight cover up or local sarong can be helpful to protect your skin from the sun when chilling.

4. A Drybag

A dry bag is handy for keeping your valuables safe, clean and dry. You can use it to store your phone, keys and other personal belongings. We can also store it safely while you’re out catching waves. Just a tip, it’s better to bring as little personal items as possible, just to be sure. Less stuff means less to worry about and you can focus on your surfing progress.

Other Stuff To Think About

1. Books or magazines

Feed your mind with a good book or magazine after those surf sessions! Pick a beach read, a magazine to relax on Bali’s beaches.

2. Travel insurance

Before you even head to the airport, make sure you fix travel insurance. Unexpected things can happen and having insurance can provide a lot of peace of mind. Opt for an insurance that covers things like medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost baggage and most importantly, adventurous sports like surfing.

3. First aid kit

Your health is just as important as catching waves. Common problems like reef cuts, bug bites, ear infections and ‘the famous’ Bali Belly can happen during your surf trip. Bring a small first aid kit with the essentials. Wounds heal slower in tropical climates, so be careful so you don’t get infections. We have seen some nasty ones, so better safe than sorry!

The Final Wave

Remember, pack light and smart! Your focus should be on enjoying your learn to surf adventure instead of bringing your whole wardrobe. If there is anything else you need there are lots of shops in Bali where you can buy stuff. And don’t forget to bring your enthusiasm!
