Ready to learn how to surf? Oh yes! That’s the best goal you can have if you ask us. Many beginners want to learn as soon and fast as possible so they can ride the waves just like those on Instagram and TikTok. And we understand, surfing looks amazing! But the big question here is: “can you really learn to surf in just 3 days?
To be honest? Yes and no. Just like any other new sport or skill, learning how to surf takes time. You have to practice, put in time and get the right explanation and feedback. It depends on who is teaching you, how many waves you ride those first days and how fast you correct your mistakes. And if you’ve only got a long weekend, this is what you can really expect.
The good news? At our Surf School In Bali, you’ll master most of the basics during your first 3 days! Let’s explore a real timeline in 3 days as a beginner surfer in Bali.
It can be both fun and a bit frustrating to learn a new sport that requires control and practice. But no worries, you can get ready for an amazing journey when you want to learn how to surf. Bali is without question one of the greatest locations in the world to learn, but that doesn’t mean you will become a pro surfer right away. To avoid disappointments, it’s important to have reasonable expectations for your learning process.
In three days you will learn the basics. Popping up, balancing and control on your surfboard and working on your turning skills. The first three days will take place in waist deep water and the focus will be on getting comfortable being in the ocean with a board. Each surf school or teacher will teach differently, but this is what you can expect generally.
Welcome to the most exciting journey of your life: becoming a surfer! Before we even step in the ocean, we start our adventure with a theory class about surf gear, basic skills and rules about safety. This is needed if you want to kick off your journey on the right foot.
After the theory, it’s time to get you into action. You start with learning the key technique of surfing: the pop-up. First we practice on dry land to create the right movement and muscle memory. Know the drill? Let’s try it in waist-deep water and practice the pop-up!
After your first lesson on the beach and in the ocean, we will have a pool session. The perfect way to refresh your pop-up technique and stance, improve your balance and improve your paddle skills.
Day 2 is about building on what you learned. We practice our pop-up again on dry land and our guides will share a bit more about checking the waves. Then it’s time to jump back in the water for white-water practice to improve everything we learned on day 1. Expect to feel more comfortable and confident moving around on your board and taking more risks now and then.
You’ll spend more time popping up, learning how to read the waves and picking the right ones without any help. A big step for a beginner surfer!
By day 3, most beginner surfers can get in the ocean without any fear and ride small whitewater waves. And as your skills progress, you can move on to learning how to turn your board. We will start on dry land again, so you can see how the board moves when you shift your weight on the board. After a few pop-up drills and repetition (reps matter ;)), it’s time to get in the water.
In the white water you will learn how to turn the board to the right side and practice trimming techniques for a smooth ride. Our surf guides provide you with continuous feedback on how to improve. Start to ride more individually and play with the things you’ve been learning the last few days!
Our Learn How To Surf Program is 5 days long, so in the last two days, you will see your skills really come together.
On day 4, your session will be recorded and you’ll review the videos with your surf guide. They will show you what you’re doing great and give feedback on ways to improve, so you can develop your skills faster. Of course you will also get your videos afterwards so you can keep practicing and post them on your Instagram stories!
By day 5, you are ready for more advanced techniques. The focus will be on paddling out, catching green waves, turning and really using the surf etiquette. Our guides will give you feedback and check if you are ready to surf solo in Bali’s ocean. Ready for your next surf adventure.
