A Day at Surf School in Bali

What You Can Expect

Every day at surf school in Bali brings something new. Factors like the weather, the swell and the difference in the group of beginners can be different. But there is one thing that we know for sure: each day in our program is an adventure that creates memories you’ll carry for a lifetime.

If you’re learning to surf in Bali, or if learning to surf is still on your bucket list, it’s handy to see what a typical day looks like. So let’s have a look at what day 3 of our 5-day learn to surf in Bali program looks like. What can you expect when you’re moving from your first two days of riding waves to more controlled, confident surfing?

After The First Two Days

By the time you reach day 3, you’ve already learned some important basic skills. On day one and two, you’ve started with the first steps of your surf journey at the beach break Double Six in Seminyak. You got to know the other beginners in the group, learned more about surf theory, learned about common beginner mistakes, practiced the pop-up on dry land and got in your first waist-deep waves. The next day, you built more confidence, focused on your posture, paddling and practicing your pop-up on your surfboard in the water.

Now, with that experience behind you, it’s time to take the next step. Are you ready for day 3?

Focus on Turning and Controlling Your Board

This day is all about refining your movements. But before you get into action, it’s important to catch up on the last two days. What did you learn? How is your body feeling? And what are your focus points for the day ahead? And yes, of course you should never skip your warming up, so this is what’s next!

All warmed up and ready? Day 3 is about learning how to turn your board, trimming and practicing everything you’ve learned on previous days. Your surf guide will show you how to turn your board smoothly and with confidence. When you’re just starting out, turning might feel tricky. But the goal is to learn how to use your weight and arms to direct the board and always look in the direction you would like to go.

You will also practice using your toes and heels to slowly shift your weight, to change direction. It might seem small, but learning these turns help you to surf the wave and stay in control. When you’re learning to surf in Bali, doing this in the whitewater is the best way to build the skills without feeling overwhelmed.

Practice Trimming For a Smooth Ride

After getting comfortable with turning, you will move on to ‘trimming’. That’s just a fancy word for keeping your board steady and moving in a straight line on the face of the wave (the unbroken part of the wave to the side of the peak and past where the wave is breaking). When you’re trimming well, your ride feels smoother, a little faster and you’re able to stay on the wave longer.

Your surf guide will help you find the right balance point. He will also give you feedback and tips on how to stay on the wave longer. Practicing these movements in the whitewater makes it easier, more controlled and helps you to develop muscle memory. This is key for your further progress in your learn to surf journey and it prepares you for the bigger green waves ahead.

What’s Next?

By the end of your third day of our 5 Day Learn To Surf Program, you will notice your confidence growing and your surfing getting better. Your pop-up will feel easier and turning will become sharper. This day is just the beginning of turning those whitewater waves into longer, more confident rides.

The skills you are working on now are the building blocks for catching your first green waves. The waves that aren’t breaking all at once. When you’re learning to surf in Bali, each small step gets you closer to riding waves and having fun.

Tomorrow, on day 4, it’s time for the video analysis. This is where your surfing will be recorded and reviewed with your surf guide afterwards. It’s a great way to see your progress and learn even more!

So, make sure you get a good night’s sleep, stay hydrated and come prepared for what’s to come. We can’t wait to see your surfing skills grow even more tomorrow!
